How a VUVAN Piece Begins

admin

Rescued Wood I've milled and dried over years.

Not every piece begins in a workshop.

Sometimes it begins after a storm, when a tree that stood for decades finally falls. Other times it begins with a forgotten object — a cracked wooden bowl, a worn piece of furniture, or a discarded board that most people would overlook.

Before any carving or restoration begins, there is a moment of listening.

I spend time studying the material. The grain. The knots. The cracks and imperfections that formed over years of growth and use. Wood carries a kind of memory — seasons of rain, years of sun, the marks of tools and hands that may have shaped it before.

My role is not to erase that history.

It is to reveal it.

Some pieces begin as fallen urban trees. After a storm or tree removal, I rescue sections of wood that would otherwise be cut for firewood or sent to a landfill. The logs are milled, sealed, and left to dry slowly in my workshop — sometimes for months, sometimes for more than a year — before they are ready to be shaped.

Other pieces begin with restoration.

A bowl that has cracked with age. A wooden object that has been worn smooth through years of use. A piece of furniture that has lost its place in a home. These pieces are approached with restraint. The goal is never to erase the past, but to stabilize and preserve the character that time has given them.

When the wood is ready, I begin shaping slowly by hand. The design is rarely forced. Instead, I follow the grain, allowing the material itself to guide the form. Knots, spalting, and natural variations often determine the final shape of the piece.

No two pieces are ever the same.

Each finished piece receives a small mark on the underside — a record of where it came from and when it was made.

It is a quiet way of documenting the story behind the object.

Every piece carries the life of the tree or object it came from — years of growth, weather, and time — shaped into something meant to be used and lived with again.

This is the beginning of every VUVAN piece.

A second life for the wood, and another chapter in its story.
